Barnes v Felix (2025)
The truth or the title?
Officer Roberto Felix pulled over Ashtian Barnes for a toll violation, where Barnes began to drive away. The officer then jumped onto the car and then shot and killed Barnes. It put into question whether the moment of threat (officer’s situation at exact second of shooting) justified his actions. The court was asked, does the context of the shooting matter in the killing of a person?
Breakdown Verdict.
The verdict was unanimous (9-0) in favor of Barnes, taking a little bit of freedom away from the police. They stated that the story behind what happened is just as important as the death itself, because it provided a reasoning. They found no reason for Felix to kill Barnes.

This case’s verdict is seen very often now in the form of bodycam footage of the entire encounter. It values context more than merit or image, so police officers now have to be trained more carefully to avoid unnecessary conflicts.
